Web Designer – Creative Internet Profession

From the author: in this article we will talk about the profession of web designer. Consider who it is, what knowledge and skills it should own, what tasks it solves, what tools it uses in its work, how much and how it can earn.
Who is a web designer?
Before moving on to a more detailed examination of the profession of a web designer and starting to analyze the necessary knowledge and skills, let’s first find out who the web designer is.

In the process of creating a site, design comes first. It is with him that everything begins. The designer does not just draw a beautiful picture of how the site should look. He designs the page so that it is convenient to use. This is necessary in order for website visitors to quickly perform a targeted action on the website – for example, place an order, sign up for a consultation, place an order, and so on.

A good designer, before starting to create a website design, analyzes the topic of the project, studies the target audience, its habits, interests. Based on this, the designer thinks over the colors for the site, the arrangement of blocks on the page, and accents.

Web design today is not just the appearance of the site, but also how easy it is to use the site, how clear it is to the target audience, how quickly the visitor to the resource reaches the goal for which he came here.

Accordingly, the web designer is not just the one who creates the appearance of the site. A web designer is someone who designs and creates a clear and easy-to-use design based on analysis of data about the target audience.

What does a web designer do?
The web designer creates layouts for any sites: business cards, landing pages, online stores, corporate resources and so on. In addition, he can create icons and other images for web use, logos and corporate identity of the company, he can create advertising banners, letter templates for email newsletters and so on.

The designer’s workflow is as follows.

Initially, the designer receives TK (technical specifications for the development of the site) from the customer. The statement of work indicates which site you want to create: for what and how you plan to use it, what task the resource should solve, who its main visitors will be, for what purpose they will come in, what content should be posted on the site. If there is not enough information to create a design, the designer asks questions to the customer or independently conducts the necessary research. At this stage, it may be useful to study the sites of competitors, as well as other resources in this or related topics.

Further, after collecting the necessary information and data, the designer, either by hand on paper or in special programs, makes prototypes of the future site. Site prototypes – a schematic, without design, arrangement of information and blocks on the site. As a rule, they make several prototypes and choose one that is most suitable.

After agreeing on the prototype, they proceed directly to drawing the design itself. Determine the colors to be used, fonts, the appearance of the blocks, background images, and so on. That is, here the output is a ready-made site layout.

The resulting layout is agreed upon and transmitted either to the customer or to the layout designer for further layout and programming.

Depending on the specifics of the designer’s work, the workflow may vary slightly, but, in general, the basis remains exactly that.

Web design tools
In this article we will not dwell on all the tools for various platforms that exist for web designers, because there are so many of them. Even sites with icons, various graphics for sites and Google Fonts are also a kind of tools for a web designer.

For a long time, Photoshop was the leader and almost the only mass program for creating site layouts. Then came Sketch. Someone switched to using Sketch, someone stayed on Photoshop. But today there is another very good tool for creating design, which has proven itself among other tools and has earned the love of many designers – this is Figma.

Web Designer – Creative Internet Profession

Figma is a new program for web designers. Using it, you can create not only prototypes, but also the interfaces themselves (sites, applications, control panel). A significant advantage of this program is its simplicity. It is because of this that Figma is winning the hearts of experts in the field of web design.

Benefits of Figma
Accessibility – Figma works right in the browser. No need to download, install anything. Just go to figma.com from any platform, log in and start working in the program. There is, of course, a desktop version, but it is very slightly different in functionality from the web version of the program. Perhaps the most critical is that in the desktop version you can work without an internet connection.
